Poker: Mindset and Attitude

The first cornerstone that determines your success at the poker table is your mindset or your attitude with which you approach the game.

Mindset and the right attitude at the table are extremely important to poker players (beginners and professionals alike), but trivial in implementation. As with most companies, your success in poker depends on having the right attitude – both fundamentally, at the table and before and after the game. It is also the right attitude that determines your success on online poker like online hold’em (온라인홀덤).

What is Poker to you? A Hobby or Profession?

  • You can be successful at poker if you view it as a hobby. You can still be just as successful at poker if you view it as a source of additional income or even as a pure job. However, you will find it difficult to achieve sustainable success if you do not know what poker is for you. Poker as a hobby should have a significantly lower priority in your life for the benefit of your family, your job, and your friends than if you are professional or semi-professional towards the game.
  • If you are clear about your basic attitude to the game, it will also be less difficult for you to display the necessary serenity and humility at the table. As a professional player, you know that you only have a chance of sitting at the table with weaker players because the nature of the game allows the weaker players to win against you even with what may seem the most absurd decisions. You also know that your weaker teammates play primarily for kick, fun, or as a pastime. So it doesn’t just make no sense to get upset about bad beats or stupid decisions by fellow players. It is even counterproductive.
  • As a hobby player, on the other hand, you can afford to focus on having fun in the game. If you feel uncomfortable with the amounts wagered, stop playing or choose a lower limit. Are you annoyed by the behavior of one or more other players? Get up, find another table, or stop playing for today. In contrast to a player who is dependent on poker for a living, you can allow yourself this “luxury”. Use it!
  • And last but not least, your attitude towards the game also determines the intensity with which you want to devote yourself to the subject of poker beyond the tables. If poker is an attractive hobby, you may find yourself reading a poker book every now and then, browsing the poker forum of your choice, or watching videos about poker. It is then not essential for you how long the poker book has been published. You don’t even think about poker for a week or a month or half a year. The game is a hobby for you. It is different when you view poker as a source of income. Then you have to be clear about the fact that the analysis and the study of the game serve not only to satisfy your academic interest but also to secure your income.

Perhaps right now the presented points on the correct mindset seem trivial to you – however – question yourself or try to assess with which mindset your fellow players are sitting at the table.
